How to Track QR Code Scans
To track QR code scans, use a dynamic QR code. Each scan passes through a short redirect link that records the time, approximate location, and device before sending the person on to your page. A static code does not include scan analytics, so there is nothing to look back on. QuikQR dynamic plans include scan analytics from £4.99/month with a 4-day free trial.

How to Set Up QR Code Scan Tracking
1
Create a dynamic QR code
On a QuikQR dynamic plan, create a code and check it shows a "Dynamic QR" badge in your dashboard. Name it after where it will be printed, such as "Window poster" or "Table card".
2
Test it before you print
Scan the code with your phone camera and check it opens the right page. Print it only once you are happy with the destination and design.
3
Open View Analytics
In your dashboard, choose View Analytics on the code to see total scans, unique visitors, locations, devices, and scan times. Pick Today, 7, 30, or 90 days, or set a custom date range.
What Each Scan Records
Every scan of a QuikQR dynamic code records the details below. They tell you when and roughly where a code is used, and on what kind of device, without identifying the person scanning.
✓
When
The date and time of each scan, so you can spot busy days and hours.
✓
Where
Country, region, and city, estimated from the network connection rather than GPS.
✓
Which device
Device type (mobile, tablet, or desktop), browser, and operating system.
✓
Where it came from
The referring app or page, when the scanning app passes one on.
How to Read the Numbers
Scan counts are a strong signal of interest, but they are not a head count. These three points help you read them correctly.
✓
Total scans
The scan count on each code leaves out known bots and repeat scans from the same device within 60 seconds. In the analytics view, tick Exclude Bots to remove bot traffic from the charts as well.
✓
Unique visitors
Scans grouped by network connection. Two people on the same Wi-Fi can count as one, and one person switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can count as two, so treat it as an estimate.
✓
Approximate locations
City is estimated from the network connection, so scans on mobile networks can show a nearby city instead of the exact one.
Compare Placements With Separate Codes
One code cannot tell you whether a scan came from the poster or the flyer. Give each placement its own dynamic code, point them all at the same page, and compare their scan counts side by side. Naming each code after where it is printed makes the comparison easy to read later.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about How to Track QR Code Scans.
No. Static codes do not include scan analytics. To track scans, create a dynamic code. An existing static code cannot be converted, so tracking starts with the codes you print next.
No. Scan analytics show when, roughly where, and on which kind of device a code was scanned, not who scanned it. QuikQR stores a one-way hash of the IP address rather than the address itself.
People often scan the same code more than once, for example on different days. Unique visitors groups scans from the same connection, so it is always equal to or lower than total scans.
90 days on Dynamic Starter, 1 year on Dynamic Growth, and 2 years on Dynamic Business. This is how far back you can view scans in your analytics.
